Big second half powers Prescott to sectional title

MENOMONIE - The Prescott High School Boys' Basketball team outscored Mauston 55-37 in the second half of their WIAA Division 3 Menomonie Sectional Tournament championship game Saturday and won their second title in two seasons 78-62 over the Golden Eagles, 18-8 overall.

The No. 6 ranked Cardinals, 23-3 overall, will take on No. 3 ranked Lake Mills, 24-2 overall, in the state semifinals Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison at 1:35 p.m. It will be the very first game of the 2017 WIAA State Boys' Basketball Tournament. The other state semifinal in D-3 pits No. 1 Ripon, 26-0 vs. No. 2 and also undefeated Appleton Xavier, which was the D-3 state runner-up last season.

Prescott trailed at halftime against Mauston 25-23 but used better shooting in the second half and better defense to get past the Eagles. Both Cardinal guards Joe Roosen and Pete Brookshaw hit several key three pointers to turn around a 30-27 deficit early in the second half to a 48-34 advantage.

Brookshaw led PHS in scoring with 28 points while 7-1 center Owen Hamilton put down 24 points. Roosen finished with nine points. Tarren Hall led Mauston with 28 points.
