Tulip, Sanford advance in WIAA state wrestling meet

MADISON - Prescott High School wrestlers Ethan Tulip and Ty Sanford both won their preliminary round matches at the 74th WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday evening.

Tulip rallied from a 5-0 first period deficit to beat Richland Center's Max Schmidt 8-7 while Sanford went for a quick pin of Peshtigo's Cam Lepkowski in 1:19.

The Cardinal wrestlers advance to today's quarterfinal matches starting at 11 a.m. Tulip will go up against Two Rivers sophomore Cody Holmes  (43-3) at 106 pounds while Sanford goes up against undefeated senior Lucius Rinehart of  Evansville/Albany (34-0) at 195 pounds.

Win or lose both Cardinal wrestlers will have two matches today. The semifinals are this evening starting at 7 p.m. while the consolation rounds are in the afternoon. One win today by either wrestler will put them in a placing match on Saturday.
