ELLSWORTH - The Pierce County Land Management Committee turned down a proposed gun range on property owned by the Prescott Sportsman's Club in Oak Grove Township during its meeting Wednesday evening at the Pierce County Courthouse.
The committee voted 5-0 against the proposal, citing the rejection of the proposed gun range by both the planning commission and the township board of Oak Grove as not being part of its comprehensive plan. The land in question is off 620th Ave. near the City of Prescott's Compost Site. The land was sold by the city a year ago to the Sportsman's Club and Club wanted to install a trap shooting range for the Prescott High School Trap Shooting Team to use along with Club members.
The meeting drew an overflow crowd to the small committee room in the courthouse with an overflow crowd spilling into the main hall. There was plenty of passion and emotion from those speaking for and against the proposal. The question of the gun range has been contentious since its first came up before the Oak Grove Town Board in the middle of last year.
