PHS runner Pena qualifies for third straight state cross country meet

RICE LAKE - Prescott High School senior Phil Pena will compete in his third straight WIAA State Cross Country Meet next weekend in Wisconsin Rapids as he placed fourth in yesterday's Division 2 Rice Lake Sectional meet held on the campus of UW-Barron County.

Pena's time was a season best 16:51 on the 5000-meter course. The top five individual runners not on a qualifying team automatically advance to the state meet. Winning the boys' race was Ashland junior Maury Miller in 16:29.

Pena's time also nearly carried the PHS boys' team to the state berth. The Cardinals placed third with 135 points, 28 points behind state qualifier Osceola. Maple Northwestern won the boys' title with a score of 89. MNW also won the girls sectional championship as well with St. Croix Central also qualifying for state by finishing second. Prescott finished seventh in the girls team standings out fo the 15 teams competing.

Senior Sam Ritter had PHS's the best time and finish in the girls' race in 20:28 but she was just one place away from qualifying for state individually.  Somerset junior Anya Swanson took first in 19:09.
