No. 6 ranked Ellsworth scored 34 unanswered points for a 48-7 win over their Highway 10 rivals in the Middle Border Conference opener Friday evening at Fuller-Symes Field.
Ellsworth led 14-0 before Dolan's kick-off return. He broke containment in the middle of the field, headed for and then raced down the sidelines for the touchdown which only put the Cardinals behind 14-7, still in the first quarter.
But the Panthers, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the MBC, quickly answered. On their next series, Logan Melstrom scored on a 78-yard run from toss sweep for a touchdown and EHS was up 21-7.
Because of Dolan's kick return, EHS adjusted their kick-offs to short, squib kicks towards the front of the Cards' return line. Not only did this prevent any more long returns, PHS players were unable to handle two such kicks and thus lost the ball twice. The Purple scored on both short drives to take 28-7 lead before the first quarter even over with and 35-7 early in the second quarter. Ellsworth led 42-7 at halftime and had running clock throughout the second half.
Prescott remains winless at 0-3, 0-1 in the league. The Cards are at Amery next Friday.
