PHS center Owen Hamilton chooses scholarship to attend Northern Illinois University

Prescott High School basketball player Owen Hamilton has reportedly selected a scholarship offer to Northern Illinois University to play college basketball starting in the 2017-18 season.

The announcement came over a tweet which Hamilton making his choice over the weekend during a recruiting visit to the campus which is located in DeKalb, Illinois, which is situated between two largest cities in the state, Rockford and Chicago.

Hamilton chose the NIU offers over various offers from schools such as Utah State, Vermont, Oakland, Mich. University, Texas-El Paso, and Army.

The Huskies are coming off their first winning season in a decade at 21-13 overall and a bid to Vegas 16 postseason tournament. NIU is coached by Mark Montgomery, who is in his sixth season. He is a former assistant coach at Michigan State under head coach Tom Izzo and played in college at MSU where he led the Spartans to the 2005 Final Four. He won the Hugh Durham Award last season for being the top coach at a non-Power 5 conference school and for leading the Huskies to just their fourth postseason tournament in program history.

Hamilton is an All-Middle Border Conference and all-region and all-state selection who averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game last season for the Cardinals.
