PHS faces familiar foes in sectional tourney

The Prescott High School Boys’ Basketball Team’s drive for another state tournament berth starts with an opponent who was a part of last year’s state tournament run.

The No. 8 ranked Cardinals face a Maple Northwestern squad they faced a year ago at the same time on the road to Madison. Last season PHS downed the Tigers 55-38 in sectional semifinals at New Richmond.

Northwestern returns six seniors who played in that game last year and also return a pair of juniors who are their leading scorers in 6-4 forward Alex Tecker, who averages 11.6 points per game and 6-0 guard Riley Stowers, who leads the team in scoring with nearly 13 points per game.

The Tigers other top scorers include senior Nate Pearson, a 6-3 guard who averages 11.7 ppg. and senior guard David Bethards, who averages 7.4 ppg.
MNW won the Heart O’North Conference with a 12-2 record. They downed conference rival Hayward to reach the sectionals by a 58-51 score.

If Prescott wins this semifinal rematch they could face another rematch with the state’s No. 1 ranked team in Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau. The unbeaten Red Hawks downed the Cardinals during a non-conference match-up back on Jan. 30 by a 74-62 score thanks to hot shooting from their leading scorer, senior guard Nick Wagner, who put down 27 points, but also from sophomore guard Tyler Scherr, who put in 15 points on five three-pointers and 14 points from 6-4 senior forward Austin Thompson. They picked up the scoring slack when PHS held the Hawks’ two leading scorers, 6-2 guard Noah Hammonds, who averages 13.1 ppg. and senior forward Lucas Scherr, who averages 11 point a contest, in check.

G-E-T made the sectional by downing Coulee Conference runner-up Westby in the regional finals 57-30. The Hawks face the third place team in the Coulee, Black River Falls. The Tigers topped Mauston 63-50 to win their regional tournament. BRF is led by Jack Roou, a 6-0 senior guard averaging 19 ppg. and Ethan Anderson, a 6-3 sophomore guard who averages 18 ppg.
