PHS boys hoops will face Somerset in regional semis Friday

The Prescott High School boys' basketball team now knows its opponent for the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament semifinals Friday at Prescott.

Somerset downed Ellsworth 71-47 Tuesday evening in Ellsworth. The Spartans, 6-15 overall, take on the No. 8 ranked Cardinals, 19-3 overall, Friday with a tip-off at 7 p.m. PHS is the No. 1 seed while Somerset is the No. 9 seed.

Somerset jumped out to an 18-6 lead on the Panthers to start the game and led 29-18 at halftime. Ellsworth came no closer than 10 points in the second half at 49-39. Hayes Hunt led the Spartans with 20 points.

Prescott swept the season series with Somerset, winning at home back in January 66-34 and winning at Somerset by a 99-37 score a few weeks ago.

The other half of the regional tournament bracket has No. 4 seeded St. Croix Central, 15-6 overall, hosting No. 5 seed Barron, 16-6 overall. also on Friday.  Barron was runner-up to Maple Northwestern in the Heart O' North Conference.

The winners of the semifinal games will square off at the gymnasium of the highest-remaining seed.

Other scores from MBC teams in the regionals last night were Hayward 57, Baldwin-Woodville 33; Amery 64, Spooner 30; Tomah 64, New Richmond 58.

Friday's regional semifinal games in Division 3 are Somerset at Prescott, Barron at St. Croix Central, Hayward at No. 3 seeded Osceola and Amery at No. 2 seed Maple Northwestern.
