MENOMONIE - The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau prep boys' basketball team demonstrated clearly why they are undefeated and the No. 1 ranked team in the state as they defeated No. 8 Prescott 73-60 Saturday afternoon at Menomonie High School in the WIAA Division 3 sectional tournament finals.
G-E-T buried three three-pointers in the games opening minutes to take a 11-2 advantage. The Red hawks made five three-pointers in the first half to Prescott's one. PHS rallied to cut the lead to 11-10 but it would be the closest PHS would come to taking the lead. The Red Hawks, 26-0, gradually built their lead to double digits and only a three-point shot by the Cardinals' Owen Hamilton at the buzzer from beyond half-court brought the margin close to ten points at 41-29.
The second half was more of the same as G-E-T increased their advantage to much as 17 points. Prescott rallied to within nine midway through the half led by 16 of Nick Gehlen's season-high 26 points. But the Hawks balanced scoring was too much to overcome as they used their quickness and athletic ability to cut through the Cardinals' defense. Chris Thompson led the way for G-E-T with 18 points, fellow guard Nick Wagner, the Division I bound senior, scored 16 and 6-4 forward Lucas Scherr also finished with 16 points.
Hamilton had 13 points for Prescott and Peter Brookshaw had 10. Prescott concludes its season 22-4 overall.
