“He texted me: ‘We Won! Call you later.’ “ Jessica Ptacek said upon learning the new that she and her fiancé John Schmitz of Prescott were the winners of $10,000 Lambeau Field wedding, courtesy of the Green Bay Packers. “Well, I wasn’t going to wait to call back.”
Yet there was a reason for Schmitz’s just-wait message. An important matter came up during his work as an engineer at the new Winona, Minn. bridge construction site. It didn’t mean Schmitz was any less ecstatic for he was the one who entered them both into the contest.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Schmitz said. “I was right in the middle of an important thing at work and I got this call from the 920 area code so I had a feeling it was going to be something good about the wedding. But a lot was going on at the time all at once. I had to get everything straight first.”
Schmitz had entered them both into contest on whim, thinking nothing would come of it. But when one of the couples that was chosen to be part of a group of eight finalists had to drop out, both Ptacek and Schmitz moved right into their place. The winner would be decided by a voting contest on the Robert Haack Diamond Facebook page over a week in December and they were able to get the most votes.
“We’re both super grateful to a lot of people in the community and families who helped us,” Ptacek said. “We can’t thank them enough for helping us.”
