ELLSWORTH – The Pierce County Board approved the county’s 2016 budget and tax levy at its monthly meeting last week Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Pierce County Courthouse.
The vote in favor of the budget was 15-1 with only Supervisor Robert Mercord (District No. 1 – Prescott) voting against. Supervisor Michael Kahlow (District No. 6 – River Falls) was absent from the meeting.
The total budget came to $36,308,348 with $17,367,017 coming from property taxes. This is up from the tax levy amount of $17,084,230 in 2015 and the total budget is up $227,075 in expenditures from last year.
However, the county’s mill rate for 2016 is at 5.98 of $1,000 of equalized value, which is down from a mill rate of 6.20 in 2015. This means slight decreases in property taxes for homes $100,000 and above.
The county’s Sheriff’s Department holds the largest percentage of the budget followed by the Highway Department and Human Services.
