PHS volleyball team downs Somerset 3-1, advances in tournament

The Prescott High School volleyball team defeated Somerset by margin of 3-1 in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament at Prescott Tuesday evening.

No. 2 seeded Prescott to a 2-0 lead in the match winning by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. But the No. 7 seeded Spartans still proved to be a pesky opponent for PHS. The Cardinals barely got past them in the regular season and SHS led the first two games before Prescott rallied to win them.

Somerset had a 13-11 lead in Game 1 before a pair of aces by Lily Weiser and kills by Bekah and Katie Miller allowed the Cards' to outscore the visitors 14-7 for the win. In Game 2,  Somerset led 12-10 before a big blocks by the Millers and a kill by Weiser gave PHS the lead again they held for the duration.

But there was no Prescott rally in Game 3. After leading 4-1 to start with, Somerset used strong serving by Allie Trautmiller and Halley Basset along with Abbie Rivard to go ahead 10-6 and 18-9 on their way to a 25-14 win. The Spartans had five aces in the game along with kills from Rivard, Tori Martell and Mackenzie Erickson. But PHS hurt themselves with mistakes according to head coach Patti Tulip.

"We were just so tense in Game 3 and forced a lot of things we didn't have to," Tulip said. "Our team's strong desire to win helped to get our focus back by Game 4."

Prescott was able to get a good working lead to start Game 4 at 10-4 to reduce any pressure and never let the Spartans get closer than four points at 15-11. Kills from Miller and Weiser along with a kill and ace from Janovec put PHS in front and the same trio along with Kate Miller kept them in front for 25-18 win.

"We just played our game and focused on winning the match," Prescot senior right hitter Kellie Maier said.

Tulip lauded Maier's play and some of her best this season as she came through with eight blocks. Bekah Miller led the team with 10 blocks. Weiser finished with a team-best 19 kills followed by Janovec with season-best 16 and Bekah Miller with 12. Alexis Maxwell finished with 25 assists and Ashley Perry had 10. Savana Stuhl, Weiser and Kate Miller led the team in digs.

Prescott advances to Thursday's regional semifinal match against Osceola. The match will be played in Prescott beginning at 7 p.m.  The Chieftains, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, downed No. 6 Ellsworth 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-20) Tuesday in Osceola. In the other half of the bracket, No. 4 Bloomer edged No. 5 Baldwin-Woodville 3-1 and No. 1 seed Altoona swept aside No. 8 St. Croix Central 3-0. Bloomer is at Altoona on Thursday in the other semifinal.
